Naija Fantasy and Sci-Fi

Not all animation is drawn or 'cartoon-like' and for this reason it is worth pausing and looking at the strides that young creatives are making using digital technologies that adopt and share techniques with conventional 'animation' and that cross into other genres.

Recently I have been working on an article about fantasy films across the continent, and came across these young creatives in Kaduna, Nigeria - The Critics. Their short films are always action packed and fun to watch, my favourite a re-telling of StarWars.

AFRICA IN MOTION 2016.... Great Festival - Great Line-up!

AFRICA IN MOTION 28 October - 6 November

This year Africa in Motion (AIM) has a fantastic line up of films and animation from the continent. In the past the festival has had animation programs that included a range of work for children and adult audiences, alongside the opportunity to get stuck in with workshops where you could be making you own animations with different African artists. The festival runs in Scotland and is by far a go-to festival for anyone interested in African film and animation. This year amongst its other films, it will include animations such as

AFRIKA FILM FESTIVAL: Exhibition on Central African Animation

This year's AFRIKA Film Festival in Leuven was an exceptional year for African animation. It saw the the screening of the original film of The Tales of Mboloko (1953) by the Belgian Roger Jamar, the very first Congolese stop-motion animation. Alongside this screening was a documentary 'Roger Jamar et les palabres de Mboloko: Pionnier du cinema d'animation en Afrique Centrale', that offered an insight into the man who made these films and the context within which these were viewed.

One was also able to attend a days worth of screenings of different animation shorts, including the works of Nigerian animator Ebele Okoye and South African artist Wendy Morris.

The exhibition will be held at the Universiteitsbibliotheek, KU Leuven between 27th March and the 26th April, and features the charming models from JM Kibushi's own films, Prince Loseno (2005) and Ngando (WIP).

The NEST in Kenya

Visual arts, film, music, photography, fashion... these are some of the aspects that the artists at The NEST in Nairobi, Kenya are exploring.

What is the NEST?

The NEST is a multidisciplinary collaborative of ten Kenyans, working collectively since 2012 with the aim of exploring our troubling modern identities, re-imagining our pasts and inhabiting mythical African futures.

Included in their portfolio of work one can find
'Stories of Our Lives', 'The Old Order of Things' and recently 'To Catch a Dream'

Archiving African Animation - FCAT

Although this archive is not strictly an archive for animation, and includes film. The FCAT film archive includes a healthy selection of African animation. FCAT also runs a yearly African Film Festival in Cordoba. This archive is an important addition to bodies that are preserving and documenting African animation.
